Requirements for admission: PhD in Physical Oceanography, Meteorology or Geophysics, adequate programming skills in MATLAB and FORTRAN, fluent English. Experience in working with inverse models for ocean circulation studies and/or in-situ oceanographic data is an advantage.

Job description:

Título: Post-Doc scholarship, 1 position

One Post-Doc research position is open at the Fundação da Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa, at the Center of Oceanography of the University of Lisbon, in the frame of the project “Mechanisms of Mediterranean Water transport and dispersion in the subtropical North-East Atlantic”, (PTDC/MAR/117265/2010), financed by national funds by FCT / MCTES (PIDDAC) under the program “All Scientific Projects 2011”,under the following conditions:

1. Scientific Area: Physical Oceanography, Meteorology or Geophysics.

Requirements for admission: PhD in Physical Oceanography, Meteorology or Geophysics, adequate programming skills in MATLAB and FORTRAN, fluent English. Experience in working with inverse models for ocean circulation studies and/or in-situ oceanographic data is an advantage.

2. Work plan: The successful candidate will prepare a gridded data-base of the North-East Atlantic using available in-situ vertical profiles, apply an inverse model technique for computation of ocean currents and estimate advective transport of heat and salt at the Mediterranean water level in the study region.

3. Legislation framework: Portuguese Law Nr. 40/2004, from 18 August (Research Grant Holder Statute); Regulation of Advanced Training and Qualification of Human Resources 2012.

4. Place of work: The work will be developed at Centre of Oceanography at the Faculty of Sciences of the Faulty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon under the scientific guidance of Dr. Igor Bashmachnikov and Dr. Fransisco Machín.

5. Fellowship duration: This position is initial open for 6 months and will begin on October 2012. The grant contract may be renewed to more 22 months, until one total duration the 28 months.

6. Monthly allowance: The amount of the scholarship amounts to € 1495, according to table values of the scholarships awarded directly by the FCT, IP in the country (http://alfa.fct.mctes.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores, grants awarded to projects financed by FCT).
The Fellows will have a personal accident insurance and, if not covered by any social protection scheme can ensure the right to social security through adherence to voluntary social insurance scheme, pursuant to Decree-Law No º 40/89 of February 1
The scholarships will be paid monthly by bank transfer

7. Selection method: Candidates will be assessed by the quality of their CV (90%), motivation/recommendation letters (10%) and possibly also an interview.

10. Publication/notification of results: The final results of the evaluation will become public, through an ordered list which will be posted at the entrance hall of the Fundação da Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa, located at the Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa, C1 bdg – 3rd floor, Campo Grande, 1749-016 Lisboa, and the selected candidate will be notified by e-mail.
