Fixed Term Research Assistant

Applicants are invited for the position of Fixed Term Research Assistant (Fish Acoustics and Marine Renewable Energy), to work on the ERDF funded LCRI Marine project (Low Carbon Research Institute, Marine Renewable Energy). The post holder will be based in the Department of Biosciences, College of Science, reference 6019. This post is fixed term to 31 March 2013.

The LCRI project is a collaborative project between academic institutions in Wales. The LCRI Marine element of the project is led by Swansea University. The project aims to promote economic activity, growth of SMEs and generate jobs through the expansion of commercial opportunities and activities in the marine renewable energy sector in Wales. Marine renewable energy is a very high priority for the Welsh Government and is also given a high priority by the UK research councils and government.

The project seeks to do this by investigating the impacts of marine renewable energy devices on the environment and the impact of the environment on marine renewable energy devices. Uncertainty about the environmental impact of marine renewables and the high cost of marine survey work is a serious impediment to the development of marine renewables around the UK coast. This post will be part of the work package that is looking at the impact on the environment and in particular fish. This will be accomplished using acoustic and trawl surveys combined with the development advanced echousounder data analysis techniques.

Applicants should have expertise in marine ecology or fisheries ecology. Expertise in fisheries acoustics and experience of working at sea would be advantageous.

Applicants will have a Degree in biology, ecology, oceanography or related subject and demonstrate good communication skills to experts and non-experts alike. The requirement to evidence active engagement in writing reports and publishing research papers is essential in this role. Experience of working at the academia business interface and experience of fisheries acoustics are desirable.

Salary scale: £26,629 to £28,251 per annum (pro rata if part time).
