The place of employment is Geesthacht.
The Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht, near Hamburg, and in Teltow, near Berlin, conducts materials and coastal research. You can find more information at http://www.hzg.de/.
The Institute for Coastal Research at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geestacht in Geesthacht, near Hamburg, Germany, invites applications for a 3-year PhD student position (m/f) in Ecosystem Modelling.
Primary objective of the PhD project is to specify the predictive skill of marine ecosystem models. The study is part of the German initiative for a coordinated project called ‘Biological Impacts of Ocean ACIDification (BIOACID, http://www.bioacid.de/). The PhD candidate will design and conduct numerical experiments using existing, trait-based ecosystem models that resolve adaptive dynamics. She/he will compare simulation results with data from mesocosm experiments and from continuous monitoring programs and will quantify uncertainties in model projections. The candidate will be involved in collaborative activities between observing- and modelling groups within BIOACID and at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht.
The position requires skills in numerical modelling and, preferably, knowledge in plankton ecology or marine biogeochemistry. Profound knowledge in statistical analysis is of advantage, and basic experience in programming (e.g., Matlab, C, or Fortran) desired. The candidate should demonstrate strong writing skills. Applicants with a Masters degree or Diploma in environmental sciences, biology, oceanography, or physics are particularly encouraged to apply. She/he will benefit from related graduate programs in Geesthacht and Kiel.
The department of Ecosystem Modelling at the Institute for Coastal Research hosts an interdisciplinary and highly motivated group of research scientists (www.hzg.de/ecomod) and is involved in various national and international projects.
