The position is financed by the ERC project DARCLIFE (‘Deep subsurface archaea: carbon cycle, life strategies, and role in sedimentary ecosystems’), which investigates the distribution, composition, and processes of sub-seafloor microbial communities. A central question in this active research field concerns the energy balance of deeply buried microbes: What are the key factors controlling metabolic processes at extremely low rates and what is the importance of these transfer processes on the global C cycle? Within a highly interdisciplinary team, this postdoctoral project will focus on the characterization and modeling of geomicrobial processes in a range of geochemical environments for which datasets of unprecedented breadth and quality are available. The Marum – Center for Marine Environmental Sciences at the University of Bremen is one of the leading marine research institutes in Europe. Job Description and Qualifications
The candidate will develop a highly flexible, modular diagenetic model on the base and enhancement of established approaches in geochemical and thermodynamic transport-reaction modeling. This model will calculate the transport and transformation rates of a great variety of different sedimentary compounds, from dissolved constituents to particulate matter, including microbial biomass, down to the isotopic level of relevant C-pools.
The candidate should have demonstrated experience in experimental biogeochemistry and/or computer modeling of biogeochemical processes. A completed PhD degree in geochemistry, environmental sciences or a related field is mandatory. Furthermore, the candidate should communicate fluently in English, both verbally and in writing, and be able to work both in a team and independently, and be willing to participate in upcoming research cruises.
We offer this full-time postdoc position for 2 years with a possible extension for an additional 2 years in the framework of a related project. The position can be filled immediately. Salary is commensurate with experience (TVL 13, 100%).
