The Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht, near Hamburg, and in Teltow, near Berlin, conducts materials and coastal research. You can find more information at http://www.hzg.de.
The Institute of Coastal Research at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht is investigating the natural physical and biogeochemical dynamics of the coastal ocean and the impact of anthropogenic influences on the natural state. We invite applications for a Postdoc Position for the department “Modelling for the Assessment of Coastal Systems”. It will partly be funded by the project “Wissenschaftliche Monitoringkonzepte für die Deutsche Bucht (WIMO)”. The foreseen work in close cooperation with both internal and external partners addresses the assessment of the marine state and its changes in the German Bight in the light of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) and coastal protection.
The position is limited for three years.
Your work will focus on the use of Lagrangian transport simulations to support a) the interpretation of long-term biological observations with respect to e.g., eutrophication issues, exploring also ways of integrating data from different locations and b) the risk assessment of dispersant application in the context of oil spill contingency planning. All studies will be performed based on already existing multi-decadal reconstructions of environmental conditions (www.coastdat.de).
You are expected to hold a recent PhD or to have an equivalent research record in the field of Earth Sciences with a focus on mathematical statistics and numerical modeling. You have skills in scientific programming (preferably Fortran) and experience with multivariate data analysis. Specific knowledge about conditional independence modeling, Bayesian networks or structural equation modelling and experience in using GIS would be advantageous.
For further information please contact: Dr. Ulrich Callies (firstname.lastname@example.org).
We offer an appropriate salary related to TV-AVH as well as the usual public sector social benefits. The advancement of equality at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht goes without saying; in particular, we are striving to increase the percentage of women in the science sector. Severely disabled persons with equal qualifications will be considered preferentially within the framework of legal requirements.
Please send your application indicating job offer code No. 2013/KB 4 to Max-Planck-Straße 1, 21502 Geesthacht, Germany, or preferably to the email-address: email@example.com. Please include your CV, a short description of your scientific expertise, publication list, and names and addresses of two references. Closing date for application is July 29th, 2013.
