The Department of Geoscience, Aarhus University, invites applications for a position at the Professor level within the field of Marine Palaeoclimate. The University seeks an innovative and visionary researcher capable of further developing the palaeoclimate and micropalaeontology field at Aarhus University. As part of the strategic planning of the Faculty of Science and Technology, The Department of Geoscience at present is in the process of renewing its profile through recruitments of new faculty members. The ambition of the Department is to excel within the general themes of Deep Earth Processes, Earth Surface Processes, Past Climate and Ocean Systems, Hydrogeological Systems, and Computational Earth Science. The new departmental profile will match the structure of the Faculty of Science and Technology and the University as a whole, which is meant to facilitate interdisciplinary cooperation across faculties and institutes. Geoscience is expected to develop strong relationships with e.g. Physics and Astronomy, Chemistry, Engineering, Bioscience, Environmental Science, and Computer Science.
The Department of Geoscience hosts a strong and internationally acknowledged group within the field of past climate and ocean circulation. The group’s points of departure comprise micropalaeontology, stratigraphy, and geochemical analysis of microfossils and sediments.
The focus of the present position includes combining the fields of geology, geophysics, physics, chemistry, and palaeontology/biology to investigate the fundamental mechanisms controlling climate and climate change. The appointee is expected to develop collaboration with other groups at the Department of Geoscience and within the university as a whole. The appointee will contribute to this with strong competences in marine micropalaeontology, analytical techniques and field based hypothesis testing. Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team as well as strong leadership qualities are essential. Other important qualifications include abilities to establish strong international collaboration links and to attract funding from national and/or international sources in a highly competitive environment.
Responsibilities also include the development of an innovative strategic research agenda, developing and leading an excellent research group, and providing inspiring and relevant education in palaeoclimate, micropalaeontology and basin stratigraphy. The appointee will be expected to teach courses at all university levels, and documented teaching skills will be required.
The successful candidate must have experience in academic leadership, and a strong record of professional and scholarly achievements. The candidate is expected to be able to contribute significantly to strengthening the current research activities as well as driving the continued build up of an internationally competitive research group focused within the areas of marine palaeoclimate, micropalaeontology and stratigraphy.
