The National Oceanography Centre, Southampton (NOCS) is seeking to recruit a postdoctoral research fellow in physical oceanography to pursue research on the dynamics of the ocean surface boundary layer (OSBL). The position will focus on the analysis of a range of novel measurements of small- and sub-mesoscale upper-ocean processes collected in the Northeast Atlantic within the OSMOSIS (Ocean Surface Mixing, Ocean Sub-mesoscale Interaction Study; http://www.osmosis.ac.uk/) consortium. These observations are being conducted by a cluster of ten moorings and two gliders over the Porcupine Abyssal Plain between September 2012 and September 2013, and involve a suite of innovative techniques, including the measurement of the rate of turbulent dissipation using high-frequency acoustic Doppler current profilers.
The successful applicant will work as part of a team examining the physical processes relevant to the dynamics of the OSBL. The group includes an active sea-going team, numerical modellers and theoreticians. The NOCS OSMOSIS project team work closely with scientists at project partner institutions both in the UK and the USA.
Applicants will have a PhD in physical oceanography (or a related field) with experience in the interpretation of oceanographic observations. They will have good knowledge of ocean dynamics and strong quantitative and communication skills, and the ability to conduct innovative research leading to high-impact publications in international refereed journals.
